Central Train Station, Netherlands

Mecanoo Architects is designing the city hall and central train station for its home town of Delft, in the Netherlands. The top level will be glass-ceilinged, and even the underground levels will have a feel of transparency and light. Vaulted ceilings, archways and a strong use of white and blue will lighten the visual weight of the complex that will include a 30,000 square-meter public hall. The four-year construction will begin next year.

1. Was bin ich?

Leser im besten Alter erinnern sich gewiss noch an einen Evergreen der deutschen Fernsehunterhaltung. Er trug den unauffälligen Titel "Was bin ich?" und wurde von der ARD-Legende Robert Lembke moderiert.

Lembke, Urgestein des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks, saß bis ins hohe Alter von 75 Jahren mit seiner Rate-Runde zusammen. Deren Aufgabe war es, einen anonymen Gast nach seinem Beruf auszufragen, und zwar, wie sich das mit persönlichen Dingen gehört, so subtil wie möglich. Eine typische Frage lautete beispielsweise: "Sind Sie in einem künstlerischen Beruf tätig?" Stimmte die Richtung, sagte der Gast trocken Ja, falls nicht, nur knapp Nein. Für jedes Nein bekam der Gast eine Münze in ein Sparschweinchen, das liebevoll "Schweinderl" genannt wurde. In der Regel kam für damalige Verhältnisse einiges zusammen. "Was bin ich?" war eine ebenso erfolgreiche wie überschaubare Sendung. Es gab nie größere Überraschungen, keine nennenswerten Show-Einlagen und auch sonst wenig Tamtam. Und nie glitt die Fragestellung ins Faustische ab: Welchen Charakter und welche Persönlichkeit die Befragten hatten, ob das Typische des Gastes tatsächlich zu fassen war - all das war bei "Was bin ich?" nicht von Interesse. Schöne Zeiten waren das, geordnete und klare - spätestens beim zehnten Nein ging die Runde zu Ende, und der Gast offenbarte seinen Beruf. Oft aber errieten die "Ratefüchse" seine Tätigkeit bereits nach ein paar Fragen. Dann applaudierten die Zuschauer im Studio, und niemand stellte sich mehr die Frage, wer da "eigentlich" auf der Bühne saß.

Der Beruf macht den Menschen. Das ist seine Identität. Stellen wir uns heute, in Zeiten wie diesen, mal vor, im Fernsehen würde die Frage "Was bin ich?" neuerlich gestellt. Wahrscheinlich sähen wir einen Menschen, der sich die Frage "Was bin ich?" ständig selbst stellt, aber keine Antwort darauf geben kann, die halbwegs passt. Münze für Münze verschwände im Schweinchen.

Doch die Sau gibt keine Antwort. Denn in Zeiten der globalen Desorientierung, der ewigen Frage, wohin die Reise geht und mit wem, was morgen passiert oder unterlassen wird, ist wohl eher zu fragen: Wozu ist es nütze, zu wissen, wer und was man ist?

Curiosities09 is a project based on the seventeenth century curiosity cabinets. 6 Cabinets have been designed, each containing a object based on subjects which are getting rare in 2009. In the historic cabinets often combinations are found of (parts of) animals which do not biologically belong together. In these new cabinets this fact is taken as a starting point to create new objects. Each object has its own function. This way we can look back after 10 years and see what the current situation is of these subjects
